About this Speaker

The Right Reverend Cathleen Chittenden Bascom serves as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas, and she is the Vice Chair of the Environmental Stewardship and Care of Creation Legislative Committee for the Episcopal Church. She is an Episcopal priest of 31 years, and has served urban, suburban, small town, and academic communities.

Creation Care has long been a central focus for Bishop Bascom. She sponsored creation scholars at Kansas State University; oversaw the installation of a downtown prairie green space as cathedral dean in Des Moines; and helped local parishes plant postage stamp prairies and organize around environmental concerns across Iowa. She has recently published a novel titled, Of Green Stuff Woven.

Along with racial justice initiatives, creation care remains a central priority of Bishop Bascom’s ministry in the Diocese of Kansas, where she and other leaders are working to establish the Bethany House and Garden Ministry at the diocesan center in Topeka. This innovative ministry will provide connection to the local community and also serve as a model for creation care and education of creation stewards that will be planted at four other locations in the diocese.
